Lake Stocking
One of LBCC’s first projects
was to stock hybrid stripers in Lake Buchanan.
Texas Parks and Wildlife had been stocking Stripers in Buchanan for
years and found in the summer time a lack of feeding activity limited the catch
rates during the hotter months. Other
lakes TPWD had stocked hybrid stripers had shown better catch rates during
those times. Unfortunately, all the
available hybrid striper fingerlings and fry from Texas hatcheries had been
secured for other stocking programs.
With the agencies guidance and approval, LBCC has purchased hybrid
stripe bass from Keo Fish Farms in Arkansas for the stocking program. There are two varieties of hybrid stripe bass,
Palmetto, a cross between a female striped
bass and a male white bass
, and the Sunshine bass, a cross between
the male striped bass and female white bass.
Texas hatcheries produce the Palmetto variety and our supplier, Keo Fish
Farms in Arkansas produce the Sunshine bass.
The rod bending hybrids you will catch out of Buchanan are all the
Sunshine variety. Each year, TPWD does
studies on the population of the different species of fish in Buchanan and then
advises and approves the number of hybrid stripe bass that can be stocked. Some years we have stocked a combination of
fingerlings and fry and in 2015, only fry were stocked. In addition to the stocking program, with LBCC’s
request and encouragement, TPWD has introduced the Florida black bass to
improve black bass size at Buchanan as well as adding more channel
catfish.
